Surge Protective Device (SPD)

A surge is a short-duration transient disturbance involving a sudden increase in voltage, current, or power within an electrical circuit. Surges can be caused by external events such as lightning activity, as well as internal events including switching operations, inductive load changes, and electrical equipment faults.

Although surge events typically last only microseconds, their high energy levels can damage, degrade, or shorten the service life of electrical and electronic equipment. With the increasing use of sensitive electronic devices in modern electrical systems, effective surge protection has become essential for improving system reliability and preventing unexpected downtime.

A Surge Protective Device (SPD) is designed to protect electrical and electronic equipment by limiting transient overvoltages and diverting excessive surge currents away from protected circuits. SPDs are typically installed in parallel with the circuits they protect and provide a low-impedance path to safely discharge surge energy when abnormal transient events occur.

Modern SPDs utilize nonlinear protection components, primarily Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs). MOVs provide fast voltage-limiting protection, while GDTs offer high surge current discharge capability. Advanced SPD designs often combine multiple protection technologies, such as GDT and MOV/TVS, to achieve a balance of high energy handling capability, fast response, and effective residual voltage limitation.
